When Fur Was Fabulous.

I've been wanting to start my series on our Classic Hollywood stars wearing their furs but with the weather being in the 60's here it just hasn't felt like winter.  I'll pretend it's chilly out for now, throw some fake snowflakes on the windows and get this fur fest started anyway.  So if you're ready let's jump right in but what ever you do don't tell PETA! I don't need those kind of problems.

Alice Faye looks quite glamorous in her white fur.  Like a polar bear who fell into a vat of glitter.

Betty Grable is fashionable in her mini.  Guessing the luggage is full of her full length furs just in case the weather dips to a cool 72 degrees.

Ann Sothern looks like a Toy Poodle competing for Best In Show.  Love the shoes though!

Mary Astor prefers the traditional mink cape over her evening gowns. The star wallpaper isn't over the top at all either!

Claudette Colbert prefers her furs to match her hair. I hope she doesn't wander off into the woods.

Marlene Dietrich has opted for a matching fur hat to keep her warm. I wonder if she's wearing fur lined slacks too?

Claire Trevor is under there somewhere.  She looks like my great aunts Chow.

Linda Darnell is decked out and if I were to wear fur I would go with the chocolate brown too. What a beauty she is!

Ann Blyth is a beauty in her white cape. I thought fur was supposed to 'bulk' you up but Ann looks like a frosted toothpick here.

Ann Francis has the right idea! Just wear something sexy and lay on the fur to stay warm and fashionable.

Barbara Stanwyck prefers the mid length fur. Always stunning!

Bette Davis prefers fur sleeves which weigh more than she does. It doesn't look all that warm but I'm sure she was a real head turner in that outfit.

Clara Bow loved her fur.  Guessing that color was red fox to match her hair.

Elizabeth Taylor was a big fan of fur when they were acceptable. She was gorgeous in her Chinchilla.  You'll be seeing a lot of her in this series.

Thanks for joining me and please return for more of my fur series as well as my post during the Dogathon on Tuesday. (More fur!)  Stay warm, film fans!

  3. Oh, Page - I confess, I love to see the stars in their furs! One star who always wore beautiful furs was Irene Dunne, so I know she will be making an appearance. Are you going to do a day for men in furs? AND by the way- I would not DREAM of wearing a fur today, as we are way more evolved. Thank goodness the faux is getting much better!

    1. FlickChick,
I love seeing the stars all glammed up in fur too. I'm guessing they cost a pretty penny and I love the different styles. I do have a mink stole which will make an appearance during my next post.

And I've got a vintage faux fur that's pretty fabulous but yes, the newer faux fur is hard to tell apart from real fur.
      Thanks for another interesting comment!

I know it's not politically correct nowadays, but I must admit to being a lover of furs.

    2. It's only peta and the media tha makes fur politically incorrect and everybody seems to just cave in and bow down to them. If everybody out there who loves fur, and everybody with a fur coat or stole hidden away in their cupboard actually wore them out, it would be very different. The world would soon see that no one gives a damn about these minority but vociferous groups and the feckless media that fawns on them selling themselves cheap for a good story.

  8. How fuzzy, funny, and furry! Thanks Page for these great images. Faux or for real, I always think a fur is what's needed on shoulders at those cold red carpet events. Alternatively, they could do what the big stars did in the day - nonchalantly drag their furs on the carpeted ground.

    1. Christian,
      Thanks for the kind comments.
I do have a few photos of the stars dragging their wraps behind them. Nothing like sable with bits of asphalt in it.

It is fun to look at the different furs. Gorgeous fashion pics.

Ann does look amazing dipped in fox. Guessing that one cost at least a weeks salary back then.

  10. Well Page, as usual, I had to stop drinking my Coke or I knew I would be spitting it through my nose! Gorgeous pictures with hilarious captions are one of my favorite things. As for wearing fur being a cultural sin, I'm going to be completely politically incorrect and say -- Minks and chinchillas don't have anything else to do ... I mean, they reproduce dramatically, and as long as they are not mistreated, why is it any more terrible to wear fur than to wear a leather jacket? OK, now I've done it -- just remember that I said they should not be mistreated. Uh Oh, I can see a crowd of people with pitchforks and torches!!

There is nothing wrong with liking fur. I have my aunts chocolate brown mink stole and an adorable mink teddy bear that my parents gave me. That is one soft bear too! : )

These picture posts of our decked out stars is always fun to do so I'm glad you continue to get a kick out of them.
      Good to have you back.

  12. Page, when I was growing up with my dear late mom, always the clotheshorse, it was a time when wearing fur coats strictly for fashion's sake wasn't considered evil (unless you lived in the Arctic and had an excuse :-)). Also, back then Mom could afford it, so I became accustomed to the oohs and aahs and pitter-patter of little pumps wherever we went. So I'm not ashamed to say I loved your cavalcade of gorgeous stars in gorgeous fur coats. The cracks about Alice Faye in a vat of glitter and Ann Sothern's poodle-ish attire especially cracked me up! Great pictorial, as always! Looking forward to your Dogathon BRINGING UP BABY post, too!

I do have my aunt's mink stole which will make an appearance in this series. I'm not ashamed to admit that furs are gorgeous and seeing our favorite stars in them is a fun look down memory lane, you know before you would get shunned or doused with paint. : (
Thanks for sharing your memories of your mom who sounds just as fabulous as any star.

  13. ‘Fur fest’ is a catchy term! The so-called queens of Hollywood look ravishing! Though, I like Ann Sothern’s outfit the most. She looks very classy and stylish. Reminds me of my dear grandma who loves her fur coats so much, she had them all put in individual coat bags, and asked us to keep them safe in the attic.

    1. Hi Joel!
Seeing classic stars in furs makes me smile. Most went crazy with them but it's fun to see. I like the Sothern photo too.

Like your grandma, my great aunt loved her furs. I do have a gorgeous mink that was handed down to me. Of course I can't bring myself to wear it. I've opted instead to buy a vintage faux fur coat that is just as gorgeous.

So glad you stopped by. I'll be starting my fur series again once we get some cold weather here so please check back and look through the archives.
